My first test subject will be myself. I will be using a simple app to track my expenses throughout the month of September. At the end of September I will analyze my expenses and try to make a change. I'll track this change in October.
This first test is not just about developing better spending habits. It's also about learning the psychology of "micro-moment" application development. At my day job, I support 50 sales reps that are asked to enter information about in-person sales calls as they have them. The difficulties of adopting this range from imperfect software and internet signals to breaking habits of documenting notes on paper and updating information on a PC at night.
I will be putting myself in their shoes and logging spending activity throughout my day. Hopefully I will learn how to develop apps that interact with on-the-go users by observing the difficulties associated with this. Lastly, I would like to peer into the psychology of interacting with mobile technology and develop training & adoption methodologies. One day (very soon) we will have devices that interact and feed us information as we perform actions throughout the day. Let's be ready to put them to work.
Below are some screenshots from my app. In the first screenshot, I am choosing "New Purchase" from the available Salesforce1 actions. In the 2nd screenshot, I am documenting my purchase. Additional information like who is recording the info, at what time, and where you are can be automatically collected. If you are interested in volunteering yourself, have an idea for something you would like to track, or are a Salesforce.com supporter who would like to get involved, please fill out the form on the right side of my page.
